Sharing Boat to Mnemba Atol/Half Day

Mnemba Atoll Snorkeling Tour: Daily Program & Itinerary

Below is the detailed daily program for the snorkeling excursion departing from Kendwa Beach to the world-famous Mnemba Atoll marine conservation area. This itinerary is designed to optimize your travel time, safety, and wildlife viewing opportunities based on Zanzibar’s dynamic coastal tides.

Daily Itinerary

1. Meeting and Departure (08:15 AM)

  • Meeting Time: 08:15 AM at the main office on Kendwa Beach.
  • Note on Hotel Pickups: If you have arranged a direct boat pickup from your hotel beach, your departure time may vary slightly. Please coordinate with the office the day before to confirm your specific pickup window.
  • Boarding: After a brief safety orientation and fitting for snorkeling gear (fins, mask, and snorkel), guests will board the vessel.

2. Scenic Coastal Navigation (08:30 AM – 09:30 AM)

The route taken to Mnemba Atoll is determined dynamically by the morning tide conditions to ensure the most comfortable and scenic journey:

  • High Tide Route (Lagoon Passage): During morning high tides, the boat navigates close to the shoreline inside the protective lagoon. This route offers a close-up, stunning view of the pristine Zanzibar coastline and shortens the overall travel distance to the atoll.
  • Low Tide Route (Barrier Reef Passage): During morning low tides, the boat travels further out along the outer barrier reef. Navigating this deeper channel provides an excellent opportunity to encounter and observe pods of wild dolphins swimming along the shelf.

3. Arrival at Mnemba Atoll & Snorkeling Sessions (09:30 AM – 11:30 AM)

The journey to the atoll takes approximately one hour (subject to change depending on how much time is spent observing dolphins along the way). Once at Mnemba, the program includes:

  • Two Distinct Snorkeling Sessions: You will explore two different reef areas within the marine reserve, famous for vibrant coral gardens, green sea turtles, and diverse tropical fish species such as clownfish, Moorish idols, and blue-tang surgeonfish.
  • Sandbank Stop & Refreshments: Between or after the snorkeling sessions, the boat will stop at the shallow sandbank. Here, guests can relax, swim in the turquoise shallows, and share a selection of fresh, seasonal tropical fruits (such as mangoes, pineapples, and bananas) alongside light snacks.

4. Return Journey to Kendwa Beach (11:30 AM – 12:30 PM)

  • Departure from Mnemba: The boat departs the conservation area at approximately 11:30 AM.
  • Arrival: Return to Kendwa Beach is scheduled for approximately 12:30 PM, leaving you with the rest of the afternoon to relax on the beach or enjoy lunch.
